Eight New Podcasts for Your Summer Listening

Each month, radio veteran and podcast junkie Mara Davis finds new podcasts to share with us. June features scams, sex, pop stars, true crime and current events. Here are her current podcast obsessions. Happy listening!

Scamanda

Amanda is a one woman “Make A Wish” enterprise—a Christian influencer with cancer, whose blog provides daily life inspirations and solicits donations to help others. But of course, things aren’t what they seem when friends and online fans are fleeced out of a lot of money.

Blind Plea

Blind Plea is a gripping saga of a Black woman in Alabama who shoots and kills her abusive boyfriend. While it is a hard story to listen to, you’ll be captivated by what she had to endure. Blind Plea asks the important question about Stand Your Ground laws: Why do they only apply to certain people?

Sanctum Unmasked

When you’re ultra rich you can get whatever you want in L.A., so opening a sex-party club makes total sense. Sanctum Unmasked is about Damon Lawner’s “Eyes Wide Shut” experiment gone wild. Weird sexual rituals, sex shows, sex addiction and, of course, some crimes mixed in. Kinky chaos ensues.

Think Twice: Michael Jackson

This new 10-part series goes way behind the music with little gems about Michael Jackson that you never knew. Of course, they “go there” with the scandals, but it’s his butterfly effect on culture, race and music that reminds us how truly influential Michael Jackson was, even when it’s super uncomfortable.

Embedded Featuring Buffalo Extreme

When the mass shooting at the Tops Supermarket happened in 2022, the ripple effect was intense. The young women who are part of an all-Black cheerleading squad recount how it reverberated through the community. Hearing it through the voices of the girls makes it intensely personal and powerful.

Witnessed: Devil In The Ditch

Journalist Larrison Campbell’s grandmother Presh was brutally murdered at her house. Two decades later, she goes back to her hometown of Greenville, Mississippi, to learn what really happened. The case is still unsolved. Could someone in her own family be responsible?

Betrayal

This series is all about relationships with secrets. What looks like the perfect love affair is anything but. Both seasons involve men who are up to sinister things while their partners are completely in the dark. When they find out what’s really going on, the shit hits the fan.

Stiffed

Learn all about the Playgirl-esque feminist magazine put out by the founders of Penthouse. In the ’70s, when the sexual revolution was exploding, Viva was breaking boundaries. Their photography and editorials were ahead of their time. It also launched the careers of people like Anna Wintour.
