Watch a Promo for Ava DuVernay and Oprah Winfrey’s Netflix Interview Special

With President Trump’s promise to “send in the feds” into Chicago to alleviate the city’s recent uptick of homicides, debates about the ethics of mass incarceration have taken on a special urgency. For this reason, Ava DuVernay’s Oscar-nominated documentary 13TH, profiling the abuses of the prison-industrial complex, seems all too well-suited to its times. Netflix, perhaps sensing the special meaning that these issues have taken on, will release a 30-minute special tomorrow as a supplement to the film. The special promises a candid interview between Oprah Winfrey and DuVernay about the film.

In the promo clip, Oprah discusses the general public’s lack of awareness about the flaws of America’s incarceration system. She explains the value of the film, to her, is that it “allows people to be able to answer the question for themselves: why should I care about those people who are incarcerated.” 13TH is currently available on Netflix, and the interview special will become available in the U.S. on Jan. 26, and worldwide on Jan. 31.
