A Sicario Sequel is Happening
If you’re like me, and believe that the drug war thriller Sicario was the best film of 2015, get excited: A sequel is happening.
The details are pretty vague at the moment, but we know that Benicio Del Toro, Emily Blunt, and Josh Brolin are all back, and the producers are in “full development” with Lionsgate. In addition, a script from screenwriter Taylor Sheridan has already been submitted, and everyone seems to love it. There are strong hints, if not outright promises, that the sequel will focus heavily on Alejandro Gillick, Del Toro’s character. Per Trent Luckinbill of Black Label Media:
We can’t reveal the plot, but you’ll see [Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin] all come back. You have such a great character with Benicio, who was as dark as he was and still so loved. That character resonates so well with audiences. People want to know what happened to him, so it’s a perfect foray for us to explore.
That’s great news, but the biggest question for me is whether Denis Villeneuve will be back as director. Unfortunately, that’s not entirely clear yet. Again, Luckinbill:
Obviously we would love it if Denis could [direct]. He’s a busy man, but he’s certainly part of the process with us right now.
No info yet on release dates or anything more specific. Still, this is a banner day for Sicario fans. And if you like great crime movies, please find a way to see it now.
