Watch Tilda Swinton Play Her Own Mother in Trailer for A24’s The Eternal Daughter

Who says the Halloween season has come to an end? The calendar may say November, but the folks over at A24 don’t really take time off from their explorations of the macabre. Today the studio released a first trailer for Joanna Hogg’s upcoming The Eternal Daughter, which appears to be a ghost story of sorts, featuring a double dose of Tilda Swinton. The film is currently scheduled to hit theaters on Dec. 2, 2022.

The Eternal Daughter certainly feels more dark, foreboding and outright frightening in terms of aesthetics than Hogg’s other dramas, which most recently included two entries of The Souvenir in 2019 and 2021. In this film, the beloved Swinton finds herself playing the roles of both middle-aged Julie and her own aged mother, Rosalind, as the pair journey to stay in a crumbling manor where Rosalind spent time as a young woman. However, it would seem that these days the boutique is mostly populated by the ghosts of the past. No official synopsis seems to exist yet for the film, and it’s various described as a “ghost story” and “mystery drama” online, but the trailer makes the scary presence pretty clear. More than anything, The Eternal Daughter will presumably be another opportunity for Swinton to stretch her legs and remind everyone of why she’s considered one of the best actresses alive today.

The Eternal Daughter stars the aforementioned Swinton, alongside Carly-Sophia Davies and Zinnia Davies-Cooke. It hits theaters in just over a month, on Dec. 2, 2022. In the meantime, check out the first trailer below.
