That Aladdin First Look Isn’t How Will Smith’s Genie Will Actually Appear in Most of the Movie

Fans haven’t been all too kind to the first images of Will Smith’s Genie in Disney’s live-action Aladdin, but all might not be as it appears. In his Instagram reveal of the first-look Entertainment Weekly cover, the star added an intriguing note: “and yes, I’m gonna be BLUE!”

In the comments to his post, Smith also replied to a follower regarding the tease. Once again, sent with an old-fashioned smiley face, Smith says, “I’m gonna be blue!” adding, “This is how the Genie is in Human/Disguise form. My character will be CGI most of the movie.”

So there you have it. Perhaps Smith’s Genie won’t be quite as embarrassing as some on Twitter have claimed.

Admittedly, the hair is still quite ridiculous, and the fact that Genie will be rendered in blue CGI form isn’t good news for those who can’t stand the look of Disney’s “live-action” remakes.

Perhaps the most reassuring aspect of this all is that last month, Smith also starred in the misleadingly generic first trailer for Spies in Disguise, which, no spoilers, isn’t quite what it looks like upon first glance.

Disney’s Aladdin is set for release on May 24, 2019. Revisit the film’s first teaser trailer here.
