Warner Bros. Announces Aquaman 2 Release Date

You ready to get wet? Well, you’ll have to wait a little over three years until Jason Momoa returns in Aquaman 2 to soak us in his power, Warner Bros. has announced. Let’s hope we don’t all turn into dried-up husks before the DC sequel hits cinemas on Dec. 16, 2022, as per THR.

The first Aquaman grossed over $1.14 billion in theaters worldwide. While landing at a point of superhero over-saturation, Aquaman managed to charm thanks to Momoa’s natural charisma and the film’s unabashed silliness. Or, as Paste’s Dom Sinacola explained, the movie is “dumb and loud and really dumb and too long and dumb but also wonderfully creative and shameless.”

As for the sequel, co-writer of Aquaman David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick is officially returning to pen the forthcoming movie. James Wan, who directed the first film, will produce alongside Peter Safran (producer for Aquaman and The Conjuring franchise, to name a few). The pair are also working on an Aquaman spinoff based around the deadly amphibious beasts who inhabit The Trench.

And while, yes, we will have a summer Olympics and a whole presidential campaign before Momoa’s back brandishing his trident, there’s plenty of DC on the way in the meantime. Shazam! will be released on April 5 this year and Joker is out on October 4. 2020 promises to be a year ruled by DC’s women; Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) arrives on Feb. 7, 2020, and Wonder Woman 1984 opens on June 6, 2020.
