Emma Stone in Talks for Starring Role in Damien Chazelle’s New Period Piece Babylon

Academy Award-winning director Damien Chazelle is looking to return to La La Land’s Hollywood setting, and might even be reuniting with that film’s star, too.

According to Variety, Emma Stone is in early talks to play the lead role in the new 1920s-set film, titled Babylon. Little else is known about the movie, which Variety calls Chazelle’s “largest production to date,” though early reports suggest that the film will tackle the transition from silence to sound in the film industry. Babylon will feature a blend of real-life and fictional figures, not unlike fellow American auteur Quentin Tarantino’s forthcoming Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Chazelle is coming off 2018’s Oscar-winning moon mission drama First Man, and is working on the forthcoming Netflix television series The Eddy, as well as a secret new project for Apple’s forthcoming streaming service, Apple TV+. Stone, meanwhile, is still riding high off of her Oscar-nominated turn in Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite.

Stay tuned for more information on Babylon, and revisit our thoughts on the last time Chazelle and Stone collaborated here.
