BAFTA Nominations: The Post Shut Out, While The Shape of Water Hits Big

Known as the British Academy Awards, the BAFTA Awards have revealed their nominations for the 71st ceremony. The nominations showed some serious snubs and welcomed some very unexpected surprises.

According to THR, the nominees were announced by Natalie Dormer and Letitia Wright early this morning in London. The Golden Globes’ big winner, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, struck it rich, as did The Shape of Water and Darkest Hour, while critical favorites The Post, Mudbound, and Call Me By Your Name all were overlooked in many categories. Three Billboards and Darkest Hour both scored nine nominations, but The Shape of Water emerged the victor with twelve, thanks to technical categories. Dunkirk and Blade Runner 2049 each earned eight nominations.

Perhaps the most shocking surprise is the British film Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool emerging with three nominations, including Best Actress Annette Bening, Best Actor Jamie Bell and Best Adapted Screenplay. Paddington 2 came as another surprise with three nominations, including Best Supporting Actor Hugh Grant, Best Adapted Screenplay and Outstanding British Film of the Year. Some notable snubs include Supporting Actress contenders Hong Chau for Downsizing, Mary J. Blige for Mudbound and Spielberg drama The Post not receiving any nominations.

The ceremony will be on Feb. 18 in London. Below is the full list of the film nominations.
