Watch the First Teaser for Netflix’s Barack Obama Film Barry

Barack Obama is apparently a fruitful topic for filmmakers. Our sitting president isn’t even out of office yet, and he’s already had two films made about him. The first, Southside With You, debuted at Sundance and was released in theaters earlier this year. The second, Barry, was picked up by Netflix at the Toronto International Film Festival, and will debut on the streaming service in December.

Barry centers on a pivotal year in Obama’s life, 1981, when he arrived in New York City to attend Columbia University. The official description for the film reads:

In a crime-ridden and racially charged environment, Barry finds himself pulled between various social spheres and struggles to maintain a series of increasingly strained relationships with his Kansas-born mother, his estranged Kenyan father, and his classmates. Barry is the story of a young man grappling with those same issues that his country, and arguably the world, are still coming to terms with 35 years later.

The first teaser for the film promises to reveal who Barack Obama, played here by Devon Terrell, was before he burst onto the national scene promising hope and change for the country. With his final days in office approaching, Barry seeks to tell us where our president came from.

Barry is directed by Vikram Gandhi, and also stars Ashley Judd, Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch), Jason Mitchell (Straight Outta Compton) and Ellar Coltrane (Boyhood). The film premieres on Netflix Dec. 16. Until then, watch the teaser above.
