Life in Plastic Looks Fantastic in the Full Barbie Trailer

After the teaser trailer for Greta Gerwig’s live-action Barbie movie set the internet alight with its irreverent, clever response to the cinematic canon, the full trailer gives audiences more insight into how this plasticized, pastel world will be rendered onscreen.

Barbie features a superstar cast, led by Margot Robbie as one of many titular Barbies, and Ryan Gosling as one of a handful of tanned, bumbling Kens. Hari Nef, Michael Cera, Emma Mackey, Issa Rae, Simu Liu, Will Ferrell and so, so many more fill out the cast. Each of these performers have now been blessed with their own bedazzled characters posters, providing Twitter with a new and reliable meme format, but really get to strut their stuff in the indie filmmaker’s satirical adaptation of this iconic toy.

Catch (some of) the acclaimed cast in the fuchsia-drenched trailer below:

In 2018, Deadline reported that the film would be a “fish-out-of-water story” that charts Barbie’s journey out of Barbieland:

She then goes on an adventure in the real world and by the time she returns to Barbieland to save it, she has gained the realization that perfection comes on the inside, not the outside, and that the key to happiness is belief in oneself, free of the obligation to adhere to some unattainable standard of perfection.”

The new trailer seems to at least partially follow this plot, with Barbie and Ken heading towards the ominously entitled “Real World,” armed with neon rollerblades and statement jewelry. Indeed, this is Gerwig and costume designer Jacqueline Durran’s second collaboration after their work on Little Women (which secured Durran an Oscar). From the looks of it, Barbie may win both of them even more critical acclaim for reimagining such an iconic figure in a mixture of pop glam and silly, knowing comedy.

Barbie hits theaters on July 21.
