Beautiful Boy‘s First Trailer Shows the Vulnerability of Steve Carell and Timothée Chalamet’s Father-Son Duo

Timothée Chalamet has been making a name for himself in stand-out films like Call Me by Your Name and Lady Bird, earning an Academy Award nod for his turn in the former. Now he’s joining fellow Oscar nominee Steve Carell in the new film from Amazon Studios—Beautiful Boy, in theaters Oct. 12—for which a trailer has just been released.

Carell and Chalamet play the father-son duo of David and Nic Sheff in a film that explores the true story of the Sheffs, as documented in a pair of best-selling memoirs by the father and son (Beautiful Boy: A Father’s Journey Through His Son’s Addiction and Tweak: Growing Up on Methamphetamines, respectively). The R-rated film, directed by Felix van Groeningen, and scripted by van Groeningen and Luke Davies, delves into the familial life of the Sheffs as they cope with and struggle through years of Nic’s addiction. The compelling trailer pulls no punches, immediately dropping viewers into what seems to be a pivotal moment between father and son, both on the brink of tears, struggling to understand and be understood. The rest of the trailer follows with similarly heart-wrenching and impactful scenes of family, drug abuse and hope.

“Do you know how much I love you?” David asks at the end of trailer. “I love you more than everything.”

“Everything,” Nic repeats back.
