Black Panther Is Now the Most Tweeted-About Film of All Time

Black Panther has become far more than a cultural phenomenon—it’s also become a movement and a wake-up call for Hollywood. On top of that, the film has become the most tweeted-about film of all time, surpassing Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It’s been tweeted about an astounding 35 million times, according to Twitter (via the Associated Press). The film has grossed $607 million domestically and nearly $1.2 billion worldwide, per Box Office Mojo, setting numerous box office records along the way.

As of right now and without adjusting for inflation, Black Panther is the 14th highest-grossing film of all time, per Forbes, and it definitely isn’t finished. Ryan Coogler’s film is expected to surpass Iron Man 3’s $1.215 billion soon to become the highest-grossing solo superhero film ever released. By the end, it’s expected to land at around 10th place overall in all-time gross, placing itself between Frozen’s $1.275 billion and Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s $1.33 billion. It’s also expected to break the record and become the highest-grossing film to be directed by an African American once it surpasses The Fate of the Furious’ $1.236 billion (sans 3D prices), helmed by F. Gary Gray.

As if all that weren’t enough Black Panther is projected to land a top-five spot among the all-time highest-domestic-grossing films. Currently, it sits just above the $600 million mark but will surely pass The Last Jedi’s $619 million and The Avengers’ $623 million. It’s also possible, but could be difficult, for it to surpass Jurassic World’s $652 million total and take fourth place. Titanic still sits at third with $658 million domestic, trailing Avatar at $760 million and The Force Awakens with a whopping $937 million.

Interestingly, Black Panther is the second fastest highest-grossing film so far and has grossed more in its first week than any other MCU film. In just 31 days, it has grossed $605 million dollars domestic, surpassing The Last Jedi, but it still could not beat The Force Awakens’ amazing $852 million dollar 31-day gross.

Finally, Black Panther became the first film since Avatar eight years ago to top the weekend box office for five straight weeks in a row. It beat out Alicia Vikander’s Tomb Raider and Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time this past weekend. It’s actually only the fourth film to ever top the chart for five weekends in a row, following behind Titanic and The Sixth Sense.

Stay tuned to see if Black Panther will reach the top five spot in America, or maybe surprise us all and sit only behind Avatar and The Force Awakens among the highest-grossing films of all time.
