North American Box Office Reaches New Record of $3.33 Billion in Second Quarter

A rising tide lifts all boats, as the huge tentpole releases of Avengers: Infinity War, The Incredibles 2 and Deadpool 2 have lifted the North American box-office record to $3.33 billion in 2018’s second quarter. This is now the highest mark for any one quarter, per Variety. The previous revenue record was set in the second quarter of 2015, which saw the premieres of Inside Out, Jurassic World and Avengers: Age of Ultron, with a total of $3.2 billion for the quarter.

Adam Aron, the CEO of AMC Theaters (the largest theater chain in the United States), congratulated the studios on producing mass-appealing, successful films, saying in a statement, “The record-setting quarter we just completed was the biggest in cinema history. We salute the magnificent job being done by our studio partners in creating the fabulous content that we, in turn, are putting on our screens.”

Aron also went on to say that theaters offering nicer amenities have made the theater-going experience more appealing than ever—he also brand-boosted AMC’s new subscription plan that is set to rival MoviePass.
