20th Century Fox Releases Trailer and Official Poster for Breakthrough, Starring Chrissy Metz

20th Century Fox has released the trailer and official poster for Breakthrough, formerly titled The Impossible. The forthcoming drama is based on the tear-jerking true story of one mother’s faith and love for her child.

When the ice cracks and Joyce Smith’s adopted son John falls into a freezing Missouri lake, all signs point to an impending disaster.

“He’s been underwater for more than 15 minutes,” a first-responder asserts. “This is gonna be a recovery, not a rescue.”

“We’ve done everything medically possible,” a doctor laments. “There’s nothing more we can do.”

However, despite the low odds of his survival, Joyce refuses to give up on her son. John’s mother’s steadfast belief inspires those around her to continue to have faith in his speedy recovery.

From producer DeVon Franklin (Miracles from Heaven) and director Roxann Dawson (House of Cards, Scandal), Breakthrough was adapted for the screen by Grant Nieporte (Seven Pounds) from Joyce Smith’s own 2017 memoir, The Impossible: The Miraculous Story of a Mother’s Faith and Her Child’s Resurrection.

Chrissy Metz takes on the role of Joyce Smith and, based on the trailer, is likely to induce a comparable volume of tears as her character Kate Pearson does every week of This Is Us. The all-star cast is rounded out by Josh Lucas (Sweet Home Alabama, A Beautiful Mind), Topher Grace (That ‘70s Show, BlacKkKlansman), Mike Colter (The Good Wife, Luke Cage), Sam Trammell (True Blood) and Marcel Ruiz. Dennis Haysbert, aka that guy in all the Allstate Insurance commercials (and the president in 24!), also has a role.

Breakthrough is set for release on Easter Sunday, April 21, 2019. Watch the trailer and see the official poster below.
