Watch Andrew Garfield Star in Trailer for Andy Serkis’ Directorial Debut Breathe

It seems Andrew Garfield has his eyes on another Oscar nomination for the forthcoming film Breathe.

Andy Serkis, best known for his motion-capture performances in roles like Lord of the Rings’ Gollum and Planet of the Apes’ Caesar, is making his directorial debut with the period piece, based on the parents of one of the film’s producers.

Breathe centers on the life of Robin Cavendish, played by Garfield, after he is paralyzed by polio at a young age. With the help of his wife Diana, played by The Crown’s Claire Foy, Cavendish defies all odds and finds a way to live his life outside of a hospital bed.

The couples’ son, Johnathan Cavendish, is a producer at Serkis’ Imaginarium Studios, and is serving as producer on the film.

With two-time Academy Award nominee William Nicholson as screenwriter, three-time winner Robert Richardson as cinematographer and a leading performance by Garfield, who just earned his first Oscar nomination for Hacksaw Ridge last year, the film is sure to get some nods this awards season.

Breathe opens in select theaters Oct. 13. Watch the trailer above.
