Everything’s Just Fine with Our Alien Overlords in the Unsettling First Captive State Teaser

Everything’s going just fine after the aliens take over Earth in the first teaser for Rise of the Planet of the Apes director Rupert Wyatt’s Captive State.

The state of our union has never been stronger, and unemployment, poverty and crime are all problems of the past, an almighty voice assures her mortal subjects. For this, we should all give thanks to The Legislature, the alien higher power that has taken over in order to save humanity from its own extinction. John Goodman asks a packed stadium to rise for our benevolent alien overlords, while Moonlight’s Ashton Sanders plays but one of The Legislature’s many proud citizens in Captive State, along with Jonathan Majors, Colson Baker and Vera Farmiga.

Set in a Chicago neighborhood nearly a decade after Earth was occupied by an extraterrestrial force, Captive State follows both collaborators and dissidents in the conflict over The Legislature as it continues its reign over the planet.

The new teaser suggests a dystopian allegory along the lines of District 9 or a more science-fiction-forward version of The Purge franchise, one that’s sure to attract plenty of “now … more than ever” comparisons with the contemporary political climate. The aliens, whom we don’t ever see in the teaser, are everywhere and nowhere at the same time, and they’ve already won. Now, it’s time for humans to decide whether they want to fight back.

Wyatt wrote Captive State with Erica Beeney, and also produced alongside David Crockett.

Focus Features and Participant Media have also set up a promotional website for The Legislature, and will release Captive State in theaters on March 29, 2019.
