The sequel will be based on author Kevin Kwan’s second book, China Rich Girlfriend. In addition to bringing back Chu as director, Warner Bros. plans to bring back screenwriters Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim, as well as producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson of Color Force, and John Penotti of Ivanhoe, though their deals have yet to be finalized.
Crazy Rich Asians was notable for its all-Westernized Asian cast, Hollywood’s first since 1993’s The Joy Luck Club. It has the best box office start for a comedy so far this year, and the best rom-com start in the past three years.
It was also notable for its audience being nearly 40 percent Asian, unusual for a Hollywood release. The film’s success is part of an ongoing trend of more diverse studio pictures like Girls Trip and Black Panther receiving both critical and box office love.
