Watch the Madcap First Trailer for David Robert Mitchell’s Under the Silver Lake
Photo via A24Ever since director David Robert Mitchell stunned audiences with 2014’s dread-inducing ode to urban legends, It Follows, we have eagerly been awaiting his follow-up. Now we have a first trailer for that movie, Under the Silver Lake … and it’s a tonal departure from the previous film, to say the least.
The description of Under the Silver Lake initially sounds pretty familiar—a young man falls in love with a girl he just met, but then she disappears, leading him on a wild goose chase. To quote the entire synopsis:
Sam (Andrew Garfield), an affable but aimless young man, becomes an unwitting detective who quickly finds himself in over his head as he investigates the mysterious disappearance of his beautiful neighbor (Riley Keough), with whom he has fallen in love. As he combs through East Los Angeles searching for any kind of clues he can find, he stumbles upon a larger, more sinister conspiracy than he ever imagined, involving billionaires, celebrities, urban myths, and even pop culture as we know it.
In execution, though, this film looks a bit less neo-noir Brick, and a bit more kooky-zany The Big Lebowski. Combining the sense of humor and weirdo-west coast characters of films such as Inherent Vice, it looks like a very interesting star vehicle for Andrew Garfield in particular, playing a young man who appears to have an inherent penchant for conspiracy theories. Is everything in Under the Silver Lake happening in Garfield’s head? Or is L.A. just that much weirder than anything we could possibly have been led to believe?
Also encouraging is the fact that Under the Silver Lake features a soundtrack from composer Disasterpiece, who did some very memorable work on It Follows. We’ll be keeping an eye on this movie until its release on June 22, 2018.
