Emma Stone-Led Battle of the Sexes Sets September Release

Directing team Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris’ (Little Miss Sunshine, Ruby Sparks) Battle of the Sexes, starring Emma Stone and Steve Carell, will hit theaters on Sept. 22.

With a script by Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire), the film tells the story of the 1973 match between tennis champion Billie Jean King (Stone) and ex-champ Bobby Riggs (Carell). The match was one of the most-watched televised sporting events in history, and played a huge part in the larger gender-equality conversation at the time.

Also starring are Elisabeth Shue, Alan Cumming, Andrea Riseborough, Sarah Silverman and Bill Pullman. Stone’s most recent turn was her lead role in Damien Chazelle’s La La Land, for which she won an Oscar. You can read more about that particular role (as it compares to the rest of her work) here.
