The trailer for the sequel to the 1996 film Independence Day, starring Will Smith and Bill Pullman, was released on Sunday.
The film is set decades after the events of Independence Day in which Earth was attacked by alien invaders using their superior technology. In Independence Day: Resurgence, humans have adapted to the alien technology, using it to create a new global defense system. However, despite these new developments, mankind is still ill prepared for the battle they will soon face when a new extra-terrestrial threat appears.
Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Vivica A. Fox and Judd Hirsch are set to reprise their roles from the first film and they will be joined by Liam Hemsworth, Maika Monroe and Joey King. Smith, who is contemplating a political career by running for president, is not returning for the sequel, and it appears his character may have been killed off.
Roland Emmerich will return to direct the sequel. Carter Blanchard, Nicholas Wright and James A. Woods will write the screenplay and Emmerich, Dean Devlin and Harold Kloser will produce the film. Ute Emmerich and Carsten H.W. Lorenz will executive produce.
Independence Day: Resurgence hits theaters June 24, 2016.
