The Next Japanese Godzilla Film Is Officially Godzilla Minus Zero
If you just felt a distant rumble, never to fear: It’s just the King of the Monsters drawing near yet again. Following the earth-shattering success of 2023’s Godzilla Minus One, which became not only the highest-grossing Japanese Godzilla movie of all time, but also the first entry in the series to ever win an Academy Award (Best Visual Effects, naturally), a sequel was more or less a no-brainer. Now we finally have a title for that film, which reinforces the idea that this is presumably a direct sequel: Godzilla Minus Zero. That title is being stylized as Godzilla -0.0, for the record. It will be the 34th entry in Toho’s long-running franchise, which of course got its start with 1954’s seminal Gojira. We’ve subsequently ranked the entire series, including the American entries.
If you’ve forgotten the context of the admittedly confusing title since seeing the last thrilling Japanese entry, Godzilla Minus One essentially referred to immediate post-WWII Japan, reeling from the use of the U.S. atom bomb, with an economy at “zero” that then goes to “minus one” following the emergence of the terrifying force of nature known as Godzilla. The film revolved around kamikaze fighter pilot Kōichi Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki), struggling with a perceived disgrace following the war, while forging a new relationship with the young Noriko Ōishi (Minami Hamabe), a displaced woman raising an abandoned baby. Godzilla Minus One was widely praised not just for its action, but for the depth of its human characters and the spirit of camaraderie it stirred as they attempted to come up with a novel solution to their monster problem. Godzilla Minus Zero could theoretically bring back both of its lead characters to the fold, given that both survived (extremely improbably) the last film, although those who have seen the film’s ending will know that something dark may be spreading from the kaiju’s contagion.
Back as writer-director and VFX supervisor is Japanese multi-hyphenate leader Takashi Yamazaki, presumably following up where Minus One left off. There are no plot details to share, although Yamazaki has previously expressed an interest in directing a Godzilla film that would see Big G fighting another kaiju, a prospect that will be inherently exciting for franchise fans. The depth of Godzilla’s rogues gallery is one of the best things about the series, and there are so many classic options, such as Gigan, Ghidorah or Mothra. Of course, it would be particularly interesting to see Yamazaki take a crack at a new kaiju adversary, or revive one who has only appeared in one previous film, such as Biollante or Destoroyah.
There’s no official release date currently set for Godzilla Minus Zero, although a late 2026 release feels most likely for Toho’s timeline. The next entry in Legendary Pictures’ American Godzilla series, meanwhile, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, is currently scheduled for March of 2027, while Apple TV’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters will also debut its second season in 2026. There’s little doubt that the King of the Monsters is riding high these days.
