Shin Godzilla (Godzilla Resurgence) to Get U.S. Theatrical Release
Images via Toho Company Ltd.Godzilla gets his fair share of movies here in the United States, but it seems it’s time to add one more title to that list: Shin Godzilla is getting a North American theatrical release. This news follows the Comic-Con announcement that Funimation Films had acquired the film from Toho Company Ltd.
Today, Funimation announced that Shin Godzilla will be released in a limited engagement from Oct. 11-18. The movie will screen in more than 440 theaters in the U.S. and Canada, with tickets going on sale on Sept. 9 on the film’s official website.
Shin Godzilla was co-created by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi, and it’s the 29th Godzilla film produced by Toho. The film stars Hiroki Hasegawa, Satomi Ishihara and Yutaka Takenouchi.
The official description of Shin Godzilla, or Godzilla Resurgence, reads:
An unknown accident occurs in Tokyo Bay’s Aqua Line, which causes an emergency cabinet to assemble. All of the sudden, a giant creature immediately appears, destroying town after town with its landing reaching the capital. This mysterious giant monster is named “Godzilla.”
Shin Godzilla has been a big hit in Japan since opening there, selling over 3 million tickets. Funimation will host two premieres for the film in advance of its release in North America. The first will be on Oct. 3 in Los Angeles, and the second on Oct. 5 in New York. Check out the trailer for the Japanese version of the film right here.
