La La Land, Moonlight Lead Golden Globe Nominations
Images via Dale Robinette, A24The Golden Globes are like the Oscars’ drunk cousin. They’re louder, and they’re often a lot more fun. In most years, that’s also true of the nominees, which are a remarkably eclectic group of TV shows and movies that often appeal to a wide range of tastes. This year’s nominees are no different.
Critical favorites La La Land and Moonlight earned the most nominations in the film categories, with seven and six, respectively. Manchester by the Sea, another heavy awards favorite, followed closely behind with five nods. There was perhaps no bigger surprise than Deadpool, which earned a nomination for Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy, and also picked up a nomination for Ryan Reynolds’ performance. Tom Ford’s Nocturnal Animals and Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge also did better than expected, picking up several top nods each. Notably absent from some key film categories were films like Fences, which failed to score nominations for Best Motion Picture, Drama, or Best Director, and Martin Scorsese’s Silence, which earned no nominations. These were two films that had carried weight through much of awards season thus far.
In television, American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson made its final awards bow, leading all TV shows with five nominations, and earned nominations for many of its actors. Game of Thrones was the only returning show in the Best Drama category, which also included The Crown, Stranger Things, This is Us and Westworld, which all premiered first seasons this year. On the comedy side, Donald Glover’s freshman comedy Atlanta got some love, and will face off against Black-ish, Veep, Mozart in the Jungle and Transparent.
Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon will host the Golden Globes on Jan. 8. Check out the full list of nominees below.
