Death Makes a Killer Comeback in First Trailer for Blumhouse’s Happy Death Day 2U
Image via Universal Pictures/YouTubeDeath makes a killer comeback in the first trailer for Happy Death Day 2U, the follow-up to Blumhouse’s surprise 2017 slasher-comedy hit Happy Death Day. Director Christopher Landon and star Jessica Rothe are back for the forthcoming sequel, which looks like it will take fans back to some familiar territory.
Two years after the first installment, Happy Death Day 2U continues the journey of Tree Gelbman (Rothe), a sorority member who, once again, finds herself caught in a killer time loop. This time around, though, everyone else around her seems to be caught in the same loops, and Tree discovers that dying over and over was surprisingly easier than the dangers that lie ahead. Rothe is joined in the new trailer by Israel Broussard, returning as Tree’s love interest, Carter David, and Phi Vu as Carter’s roomate, Ryan, who finds himself caught in a time loop of his own in the latest installment.
Blumhouse head Jason Blum returns to produce Happy Death Day 2U, while executive producers Angela Mancuso and John Baldecchi are joined by newcomer Samson Mucke (Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse).
Surprisingly, the new trailer spoils the first film, which ends with the revelation that Tree’s roommate Lori (Ruby Modine) was the masked killer all along. Tree pushes Lori to her death at the end of that film, and it seems that Lori is still buried for good, although no one’s death is ever truly final in the Happy Death Day universe.
Happy Death Day 2U hits theaters next Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, 2019.
