New on HBO Now: All the Movies and TV Coming in June
Photo by John P. Johnson/HBOJune is almost here, and with it comes HBO’s selfless attempt to save us from sunburns. As we enter the first full month of summer, let’s take a look at exactly what tasty morsels HBO is offering us for our impending binge sessions.
There are more than a few original programming highlights for HBO’s June slate. Sadly, we’ll see the series finale of HBO’s critically acclaimed The Leftovers on June 4. Once we’ve emotionally recovered from that, June 25 will see us sending off HBO original series Veep and Silicon Valley as their sixth and fourth season finales air, respectively. Additionally, Silicon Valley’s Erlich Bachman will star in his first HBO stand-up special T.J. Miller: Meticulously Ridiculous, produced for HBO by Funny Or Die. If the trailers are any indication, the man will spill a lot of water on himself.
On the movie front, subscribers will be able to delve into a few intense action films, with classics like Speed and The Bodyguard pairing favorably with newer films like The Accountant, which follows a brilliant, mathematical savant who is as skilled at snapping bad guys’ necks as he is terrible at holding conversations with women. The spy-comedy genre is surprisingly well represented with Get Smart, I Spy and the actually-funny Spy rounding out the inexplicable onrush of likeminded films.
If anything, the bigger development is just how many excellent films will be leaving HBO come the end of June. Highly acclaimed comedies such as Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Deadpool will head out the door alongside action-packed films like Live Free or Die Hard and Bourne Ultimatum. We’re even losing a multiple-Oscar winner in Dallas Buyer’s Club, which shows actor and rockstar Jared Leto giving the performance of his life as an HIV-positive trans woman.
