Watch the trailer above for Ron Howard’s new aquatic epic In the Heart of the Sea. The film stars Chris Hemsworth stars as the captain of the 1820 whaling ship Essex, which is attacked by a colossal sperm whale, sending the crew on a horrific journey of survival. It is the story that would later inspire Herman Melville to write Moby Dick.

In the Heart of the Sea is in theaters Dec. 11.
