Artist and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola announced yesterday via social media that not only is there an R-rated reboot of the franchise coming, but that the director and star are already in place.
First, here’s the text of Mignola’s brief Facebook post:
Okay, here’s some news—
There IS going to be another HELLBOY MOVIE.
It’s going to be an R rated reboot directed by Neil Marshall (The Descent, Game Of Thrones) and staring David Harbour (Stranger Things) as Hellboy.
More news to come soon—
THR then confirmed that Stranger Things’ David Harbour is in talks to star as the titular hellish boy, with Neil Marshall (The Descent, Game of Thrones) on board to direct the R-rated reboot. Mignola himself will co-write the film, along with Andrew Cosby and Christopher Golden.
As bummed as fans may be that this isn’t Guillermo Del Toro’s fabled, planned Hellboy 3 starring Ron Perlman, they should take solace in the fact that this one might actually happen. With known quantities like Harbour, Marshall and Mignola involved, this take on a prospective third movie has a better chance than ever. The only info we ever had about Del Toro’s version of Hellboy’s next outing was Perlman’s description of an “incredibly theatrical,” “highly charged” movie which the actor briefly described to IGN in 2015.
