Claire Denis Heads to Space for English-Language Debut in Eerie First High Life Trailer

Space meets sexual body horror in the first trailer for High Life, the English-language debut of French director Claire Denis, starring Robert Pattinson and Denis’ Let the Sunshine In collaborator Juliette Binoche.

High Life, which was acquired by A24 for North American distribution at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, follows a group of death-row inmates who set off to space in hopes of being freed by finding an alternate energy source. But soon, the criminals are forced to participate in artificial insemination experiments against their will.

The film also stars Mia Goth, Lars Eidinger and André Benjamin (aka Outkast’s André 3000).

The new trailer provides the sort of atmospheric sci-fi imagery you’d expect from classic space odysseys like 2001 or Alien, but early Twitter reviews suggest Denis hasn’t lost her perverse edge with her first outing in the genre. Any film that can be described as “Claire Denis’ 2001: A Jizz Odyssey” is sure to at least raise some eyebrows.

High Life premieres in France on Nov. 7, although so far A24 has only revealed that a U.S. release will be coming sometime in 2019.
