New Hocus Pocus Film in Early Development at Disney

If you know how to properly celebrate Halloween, you’ll know that the holiday isn’t just one night, but rather the whole damn month of October. And within that month will, of course, be several airings of Disney cult classic Hocus Pocus on Disney Channel and Freeform (formerly ABC Family). To our luck, Disney is in the early stages of creating a new Hocus Pocus film, per Buzzfeed News.

Scarlett Lacey (The Royals) and David Kirschner, a producer for the original movie, will serve as executive producers. According to Deadline, original director Kenny Ortega, who has since worked on the widely popular High School Musical and Descendants movies, will not be involved. As Buzzfeed refers to the project as a “new incarnation,” we expect this to be a reboot of sorts.

The 1993 original movie starred Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy as three evil witches who are resurrected in the town of Salem, Mass. While the three actresses’ involvement is unknown at this point, the popularity of the original movie could be enough to have the three at least appear in some sort of cameo, and Midler has previously expressed the group’s interest in returning: “I have canvassed the girls and they are willing to do it,” she wrote in a 2014 Reddit AMA.

While the original movie didn’t receive the best reception at the time, the movie has become a cult hit over the past couple of decades, and you’ll sure be seeing it a lot on television in the next month, whether you like it or not. You’ll eventually get Midler’s rendition of “I Put a Spell on You” (one of our top seven Midler musical moments) stuck in your head again, so might as well check it out once more, embedded below.
