House of Cards Star Robin Wright Cast in Bladerunner Sequel

Robin Wright, the actress behind House of Cards’ calculating and serrated Claire Underwood, is wrapping up negotiations for a starring role in the anticipated sequel to 1982 sci-fi masterpiece Blade Runner.

The Ridley Scott film will feature Wright in one of the story’s main female roles, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Her involvement with the production has been talked about for several weeks, but delays in her official sign-on were a result of potential scheduling conflicts with Wright’s House of Cards schedule.

The sci-fi thriller, set in a dystopian Los Angeles where agents are trained to hunt down genetically engineered people, will also star Ryan Gosling and feature the return of Harrison Ford’s cult-classic character, Rick Deckard. Blade Runner 2 will be directed by Sicario’s Denis Villeneuve and backed by Alcon Entertainment.

Few details are known about the sequel, outside of the fact that it plans to pick up several decades after the events of the original film. The screenplay is based on an idea by Scott and Hampton Fancher, who will co-write the film along with Michael Green. Scott will serve as an executive producer.

Audiences can expect to see Blade Runner 2 arrive in theaters on Jan. 12, 2018. Until then, read up on the film’s opening scene here.
