Joaquin Phoenix Swings For the Academy Fences in Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far On Foot Trailer

Fact 1: Joaquin Phoenix, despite being nominated for three Academy Awards in his career, does not currently possess an Oscar statuette all his own.

Fact 2: Joaquin Phoenix’s chances of owning an Oscar statue are going to be considerably higher after next year’s Academy Awards.

That’s because Phoenix finds himself starring in not one, but multiple films this year that seem tailor-made to earn acting nominations. At the next year’s awards ceremony, Phoenix could well find himself nominated for the likes of You Were Never Really Here, and that’s not even including what looks like an equally impressive turn in Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far On Foot.

Oh, and speaking of that particular alcoholism dramedy, a captivating new trailer just hit the web. Take a gander below:

Phoenix is playing John Callahan, a writer-cartoonist described as having “a lust for life, a talent for off-color jokes, and a drinking problem.” As for the rest of the synopsis, read on:

When an all-night bender ends in a catastrophic car accident, the last thing he intends to do is give up drinking. But when he reluctantly enters treatment —with encouragement from his girlfriend (Rooney Mara) and a charismatic sponsor (Jonah Hill) —Callahan discovers a gift for drawing edgy, irreverent newspaper cartoons that develop an international following and grant him a new lease on life. Based on a true story, this poignant, insightful and often funny drama about the healing power of art is adapted from Callahan’s autobiography and directed by two-time Oscar® nominee Gus Van Sant. Jack Black, Carrie Brownstein, Beth Ditto and Kim Gordon also star.

Look at that supporting cast! Rooney Mara, Jonah Hill, Jack Black, Carrie Brownstein and more? This thing has “Oscars” written all over it. And it doesn’t hurt that despite the subject matter, Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far On Foot looks disarmingly funny as well.

Amazon Studios will release the Gus Van Sant-directed film on July 13, 2018.
