Jurassic World Has Gone Full-On Horror Movie in the Final Trailer For Fallen Kingdom

Warning: There are probably going to be some serious spoilers for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom below, even though this is just a trailer.

Okay, folks. The latest and final trailer for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom has hit the web, and all we can say is “wow.” It’s a huge reveal that essentially tells us we’ve all been expecting the wrong movie ever since the first footage was revealed. As director J.A. Bayona says himself in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the film will essentially undertake a complete genre shift at the halfway mark. After sucking its leads from the last film (Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard) back into an ill-fated rescue mission, it seems that the real plot revolves around more genetic inbreeding to create a new dinosaur described in the trailer as “the most dangerous creature that ever walked the Earth.” That dinosaur—along with a bunch of others that seem to have somehow been released into the wider world—then runs amok, menacing the characters in a claustrophobic mansion setting. There are shots in the trailer that conjure up images straight out of films such as The Wolf Man, with the dinosaur braying in front of the full moon. Is this Jurassic Park, or a secret entry into Universal’s so-called “Dark Universe” series? Says Bayona:

“The first half, you have a whole dinosaur movie on the island, so you have what you expect from a Jurassic movie. Then the second half moves to a totally different environment that feels more suspenseful, darker, claustrophobic, and even has this kind of gothic element, which I love.”

On some level, this finally makes the choice of Bayona as director make sense. Although he directed the 2012 natural disaster drama The Impossible, he’s best known as the creator of one of the best gothic ghost stories of the 2000s, The Orphanage. He’s long considered Guillermo Del Toro a mentor, and if this new footage is to be believed, he’s brought those classical horror sensibilities with him. Check out the trailer below.

The first Jurassic World from Colin Trevorrow, despite garnering mixed reviews, was an absolute box office sensation, proving that audiences were desperate to return to the island to see some of their favorite CGI dinosaurs. It raked in an insane $1.67 billion at the global box office, making it the fourth highest-grossing film of all time without adjusting for inflation, trailing only Avatar, Titanic and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Should audiences enjoy the genre shift of Fallen Kingdom, it could represent a truly star-making opportunity for Bayona—not to mention yet another instance of horror or horror-adjacent cinema making massive box office dollars in the last few years in the U.S. market.
