Ben Affleck Confirms That Henry Cavill Had a “Porn-Star Moustache” During Justice League Reshoots

To our amusement, news about reshoots for the forthcoming Justice League had an interesting footnote. Due to scheduling conflicts with Christopher McQuarrie’s Mission Impossible 6, star Henry Cavill had to play double duty and jump back-and-forth between productions. But as Cavill has to sport a rocking mustache for MI6, he also had to perform as Superman with said ‘stache, with the facial hair being removed in post-production. Co-star Ben Affleck had some choice words for Cavill’s face caterpillar.

Speaking to Empire, Affleck had this to say about the fuzz: “It was a full-on porn-star moustache. He looked like a porn star from the ’70s, just with a better body. It’s a different twist [on Superman].”

We like what we see, but we remain heartbroken that we won’t have a canonical mustachioed Superman in Justice League. Cavill himself addressed the controversy on Instagram; in July:

Dear followers,
it is time to finally set the record straight in this moustache fiasco. Pictured above, is not a set on MI6 but is in fact the latest in a series of weapons being designed by Warner Bros and Paramount Studios to combat the entity known as “Henry Cavill’s Moustache”. There has been no discussion over whether to shave or not to shave for the JL reshoots, simply a relentless campaign to put an end to the seemingly inexorable conquest of this despotic ‘stache. It is not a question of IF I should shave – it is a question of how can we possibly be victorious against such a beast without bringing our own doom raining down upon us.

In other words, as Cavill’s Superman would say: “The mustache is dead. Bury it.” For now, we’ll just keep dreaming.

Justice League and its clean-shaven Superman will fly into theaters on Nov. 17. Joss Whedon is helming reshoots after director Zack Snyder left the film in the wake of a family tragedy.
