Karen Gillan to Star in “Assassin Action Thriller” Gunpowder Milkshake

It’s fair to say that Karen Gillan has had a big couple of years in 2017 and 2018. The 31-year-old actress appeared as Nebula in new entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and coupled it with a role in one of 2017’s unexpected smash hits, Jumanji. At the same time, she also made her directorial debut with the indie feature The Party’s Just Beginning, while setting up and filming appearances in the upcoming Avengers: Endgame and the star-studded Jumanji sequel. Talk about raising your stock in Hollywood, right?

Now, Gillan will get a chance to be the frontline star of another potential franchise, Gunpowder Milkshake. An “assassin action thriller” from Studiocanal and The Picture Company, the project is described as being “in the assassin genre, with a story that spans multiple generations,” with clear influence from the likes of Tarantino’s Kill Bill and Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver. According to The Hollywood Reporter, keywords are “stylish,” “snappy” and “violent.” Sounds okay to us.

The all-female cast would be directed by Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado, primarily known for the 2013 Israeli film Big Bad Wolves. Hopefully their results are a little bit more grounded in reality than the likes of Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch, with which a concept like this seems to share some DNA. Regardless, with Gillan as the central figure—the Uma Thurman role, as it were—the production should be in good hands.

We’ll bring you more details on Gunpowder Milkshake, including the provenance of that odd name, whenever the project begins to take shape.
