The remake puts a new twist on the adventures of two best friends (originally played by hip-hop duo Kid ’n Play) on the night of a high school house party, and the production is looking to cast musicians in pivotal roles, much like the original.. As James told THR, “This is definitely not a reboot. It’s an entirely new look for a classic.” He relished the thought of bringing “a new House Party to a new generation” as “unbelievable.”
James’s producing partner, Maverick Carter, emphasized keeping in step with the original film’s musician-filled cast, stating, “We’re trying out some ideas for musicians to be cast in and to be a part of the project.” Carter skirted around the question of James making a cameo in the film, saying, “There’s no plan for it now, but he’s a fantastic actor, and if he wants a role, Stephen will find a great role to put him in.”
No release date has been set for the forthcoming film.
Along with the House Party remake, SpringHill has a full slate including a Madam C.J. Walker limited series for Netflix (produced by and starring Octavia Spencer), a Starz docuseries based on a Florida youth football league titled Warriors of Liberty City and the NBC hit game show The Wall.
