Lin-Manuel Miranda to Produce Film and TV Adaptations of Patrick Rothfuss’ The Kingkiller Chronicle

How Lin-Manuel Miranda even has time to sleep is a mystery, and yet he’s still adding new projects to his schedule. TheWrap is reporting that Miranda’s latest addition to his workload is a movie and television adaptation of Patrick Rothfuss’ beloved fantasy novel series The Kingkiller Chronicle for Lionsgate.

Miranda will be a “creative producer” on the project, a rather vague title, but Miranda said on Twitter that he’s going to “spend time figuring out how to share [the world of the books] with you.” On top of that, he’ll also be writing music and songs for the adaptations, naturally. Miranda will also have the option to work on a potential stage adaptation of the books.

The movie will be based on the first book in the planned trilogy, The Name of the Wind, and will be written by Lindsey Beer, who’s working on Transformers: The Last Knight and the forthcoming Dungeons and Dragons movie. The TV series will explore new stories that “expand on the world outside of the books” and will be overseen by Miranda and Rothfuss.

Miranda, speaking on what drew him to the adaptation, said:

Pat Rothfuss’ Kingkiller books are among the most read and re-read in our home. It’s a world you want to spend lifetimes in, as his many fans will attest. Pat also writes about the act of MAKING music more beautifully than any novelist I’ve ever read. I can’t wait to play a part in bringing this world to life onscreen.

Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Co-President Erik Feig said:

The best way to service Pat Rothfuss’ unique and ambitious view was to invent a new way of adapting it with Lionsgate’s film and television teams working side-by-side, which meant that only a multi-hyphenate talent like Lin-Manuel Miranda could do the job. Lin is an incomparable talent and a huge fan of the trilogy and, working closely with Pat, his creative oversight of the franchise will bring an incredible level of detail and continuity to all of the projects.

Miranda’s Kingkiller Chronicles movie and TV series currently do not have a release date.
