The first official photos from Greta Gerwig’s next film, Little Women, offer us a peek at the March family and other classic characters, played by an illustrious acting roster that includes Emma Watson, Timothée Chalamet and Saoirse Ronan.
Helmed by Gerwig, the indie filmmaker whose directorial debut, the critically acclaimed Lady Bird, introduced her to Ronan and Chalamet pre-Little Women, the film brings new faces to the oft-adapted feminist classic.
Succeeding the likes of Katharine Hepburn and Winona Ryder, Ronan plays Jo March, still fresh off her starring roles in 2018’s Mary Queen of Scots and 2017’s Lady Bird.
In her typical odd, boyish way, Jo is pictured unwinding on the living room rug. In another image, she faces Laurie, her best friend and closest confidant, in a tender moment.
But of course, it’s the love among sisters that shines through the brightest in Louisa May Alcott’s beloved novel. And we see that love in the warmly lit image of Meg, Joe and Amy performing in an amateur play staged in their home.
We also see all the sisters—Meg, Amy, Jo and Beth—together as they look out a window. Guess we’ll have to wait and see what the girls are looking at so intently.
Watson stares wistfully into the distance with a notebook in front of her in another image. She plays the oldest sister, Meg, who works as a governess to make ends meet. The only sister who remembers a time during which the Marches were wealthy, Meg longs for pretty things and dons a gorgeous pale pink ball gown in one image.
