Martin McDonagh to Direct The Banshees of Inisheer, New Film Staring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson
Photo by Greg Doherty/GettyMartin McDonagh, the prolific film director and playwright known for feature films In Bruges (2008), Seven Psychopaths (2012) and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017), is set to direct a new film starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, who both had leading roles in In Bruges. The film will be called The Banshees of Inisheer, according to Deadline.
In Bruges, a dark comedy about a pair of hitmen (Gleeson and Farrell) hiding out in the titular Belgian town, catalyzed McDonagh’s career. Three Billboards, which centers on a woman (Frances McDormand) who seeks answers for the death of her daughter, earned seven Academy Award nominations, including a Best Actress win for McDormand and a Best Supporting Actor win for Sam Rockwell.
In The Banshees of Inisheer, set on an Irish isle, Farrell and Gleeson will play two friends whose lives suddenly become much more complicated when one of them ends the friendship. The film will reportedly begin production over the summer and Searchlight Pictures has acquired the distribution rights.
The Banshees of Inisheer isn’t the only project that McDonagh has in the works at the moment, however: His play Hangmen will begin a Broadway run in March. Previously, McDonagh penned the play A Very, Very Dark Matter in 2018, based on a Hans Christian Andersen tale.
