Sony Producer Says Tom Holland Will Return for Another Trilogy of MCU Spider-Man Movies

The upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home, due out Dec. 17, 2021 in the U.S., is being positioned as more or less the culmination of the entire last 20 years of Spider-Man cinematic content, beyond even the MCU years for the character—a sort of Endgame for everything in the greater Spider-Verse. It will see the return of many characters long gone, from both the Sam Raimi/Tobey Maguire era, and the subsequent (and less beloved) Amazing Spider-Man era that starred Andrew Garfield. And with so much riding on this big culmination, which also delves into the live action version of the Marvel multiverse seen in Into the Spider-Verse, it’s perhaps no surprise that we haven’t heard a lot about Marvel/Sony/Disney’s plans for the character after this film is finally out. Until, that is, Sony producer Amy Pascal went and confirmed today that Tom Holland will remain, potentially for an entire additional trilogy of films.

Pascal, who has produced various Spider-Man adjacent projects including Homecoming, Venom and Morbius, rather casually (and unexpectedly) made this announcement in the course of an interview with Fandango. When asked if this was the end of the series, Pascal dropped the following:

“Yes, Marvel and Sony are going to keep going together as partners. This is not the last movie that we are going to make with Marvel – [this is not] the last Spider-Man movie. We are getting ready to make the next Spider-Man movie with Tom Holland and Marvel, it just isn’t part of… we’re thinking of this as three films, and now we’re going to go onto the next three. This is not the last of our MCU movies.

Well, there’s nothing really opaque about that statement, is there? One has to wonder whether Pascal was really meant to drop such a bombshell quite so directly, but it would seem that the cat is now out of the bag. When asked if Tom Holland’s Spider-Man would ever come up against Tom Hardy’s Venom, meanwhile, or whether fans would see a live-action version of Miles Morales, Pascal said the following:

“I would say there’s so many things that we’re going to be able to explore, but what we always have to do before we decide who the villain is going to be and what Spidey goes up against is what is the story we’re telling about? You know? What’s the Peter Parker story we’re telling? What’s the Miles Morales story that we’re telling? But we always have to start with that. The good thing about these movies is as big as the canvas they take place on can be, they are always just stories about a kid.”

Now there’s the kind of open-ended response you expect from a big-time film producer. Regardless, fans of the MCU era Spider-Man apparently will have a lot more to look forward to in the years to come, as it doesn’t sound like Holland will be done anytime soon. One has to wonder, with the multiverse now in play, what kind of ridiculous challenges will this Spider-Man be tackling two or three films from now?
