Melissa McCarthy Is Nominated for both “Best” and “Worst” Actress at the Oscars and the Razzies

Not since Sandra Bullock’s teeth-gnashing performance in 2009’s All About Steve has someone in Hollywood had a chance for this most dubious of all cinematic feats of recognition: Melissa McCarthy might be able to win an Oscar and a Razzie Award in the same year.

As both the full Academy Award nominations and the accompanying Razzie Award nominations were announced this morning, it quickly became clear that history was in the making. Melissa McCarthy has found herself simultaneously nominated for Best Actress in recognition of her performance in Can You Ever Forgive Me? and the Razzie’s Worst Actress thanks to both The Happytime Murders and Life of the Party.

If successful in winning both, McCarthy would be only the second person to win an Oscar and a Razzie in the same year. The first was the aforementioned Bullock in 2009, when she won Best Actress for The Blind Side and Worst Actress for the truly abysmal All About Steve. As a good sport, Bullock actually showed up to collect her Razzie in person and address the crowd, one day before she would take home her Oscar statuette.

Other notable dual winners include a bevy of actors who have won both an Oscar and a Razzie in the course of their careers, albeit not in the same year. These include the likes of Halle Berry, who also memorably collected her Razzie for Catwoman in person, three years after winning Best Actress for Monster’s Ball. Others who have collected both statuettes include Eddie Redmayne, Brad Pitt, Ben Affleck, Kevin Costner, Nicole Kidman and Al Pacino.
