Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution Is the First CGI Pokémon Movie

Detective Pikachu isn’t the only Pokémon movie that will be released this year—and it might not even be the only one that looks at least a bit jarring to old-time fans of the series.

Earlier this week, The Pokémon Company unveiled a teaser for Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution. It looks to be a CGI remake of the very first Pokémon movie, Mewtwo Strikes Back, which was originally released in 1998.

Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution marks the first CGI movie of the series. The trailer is mostly composed of text, with the phrase “The legend is back” front and center before showing a sneak peek of what Mewtwo looks like in CGI form. From the small clip that can be seen, the graphics may lack the charm of the original but it’ll be interesting to see how the rest of the movie will look.

Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution will be released on July 12 in Japan. There is currently no word on when or if it will be shown in North American or European theaters.
