Netflix has released the first trailer for Beasts of No Nation, an original film written and directed by True Detective Season One’s award-winning director, Cary Joji Fukunaga. Fukunaga adapted the Beasts of No Nation script from Nigerian author Uzodinma Iweala’s 2006 novel of the same name.
The film’s bone-chilling teaser showcases star Idris Elba (Luther) as a ruthless West African warlord who commands a unit of child soldiers. A boy named Agu, played by young newcomer Abraham Attah, is kidnapped and forced to become one of the Commandant’s mercenaries when civil war tears his family apart.
Beasts of No Nation is Netflix’s first major theatrical film acquisition, and judging by the sheer, adrenaline-pumping intensity of this teaser, the streaming service chose wisely. Fukunaga looks to have retained his touch when it comes to crafting riveting action and drama.
Beasts of No Nation will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September before hitting Netflix and select theaters on Oct. 16. Watch the trailer above.
