Another month means another plentiful bounty of fine programming headed to HBO Now. August will see a number of original programming highlights headed to HBO’s standalone streaming platform, including the finale of the much-buzzed-about new crime series The Night Of, as well as the premiere of NFL fan-favorite Hard Knocks, with this year’s installment focused on the newly relocated Los Angeles Rams. Also on their way are two new documentaries: Meet the Donors: Does Money Talk, which finds intrepid filmmaker Alexandra Pelosi exploring what goes on behind the scenes of big-money political fundraisers, and Hitchcock/Truffaut, which documents a weeklong 1962 discussion between legendary directors Francois Truffaut and Alfred Hitchcock, in which the latter breaks down his career film-by-film for the former, then a young French filmmaker on the rise; Hitchcock/Truffaut also features directors Martin Scorsese, David Fincher, Wes Anderson, James Gray, Richard Linklater and Paul Schrader discussing the impact of the resulting book of the same title, which debuted 50 years ago in August.
HBO Now’s theatrical highlights of August will include a pair of 2016 awards-season standouts: The Danish Girl, for which Alicia Vikander won a Best Actress Oscar while Eddie Redmayne was nominated for Best Actor, and the lovely Brooklyn, which garnered three Oscar noms, including Best Picture. Other noteworthy features coming to the platform include The Peanuts Movie, Youth, The Theory of Everything, The Aviator, Capote, One Hour Photo and, last but by no means least, a treasure trove of classic Al Pacino films, including Scarface, Carlito’s Way, Dog Day Afternoon and The Scent of a Woman. (Hoo-ah!) However, HBO Now’s departing movies include the phenomenal Mad Max: Fury Road, not to mention such fan favorites as Barbershop, Spaceballs, Alpha Dogs and Tropic Thunder, so be sure to enjoy those while you can.
Not to be forgotten are a handful of late original programming additions for July that didn’t make it into last month’s HBO Now run-down. These include all three seasons of Todd McFarlane’s Spawn, the ‘90s animated HBO series based on the iconic comic book antihero, as well as a new weekly, Spanish-language, anything-goes late-night talk show titled Chumel con Chumel Torres that examines Mexico and Latin America’s most relevant events through a sharp, critical lens. Spawn is available to stream now, while Chumel con Chumel Torres doesn’t debut until July 25, with new episodes to follow on subsequent Monday nights.
