Octavia Spencer to Star in Psychological Thriller Ma From Blumhouse Productions

Octavia Spencer, best known for her Academy Award-winning performance in 2011’s The Help, has been quite a busy woman lately. Blumhouse Productions’ psychological thriller Ma now marks one of many forthcoming projects for Spencer, including the Apple thriller Are You Sleeping and an untitled holiday comedy with friend Jessica Chastain.

Per Deadline, Ma will see Spencer will play a lonely woman with a dark side who meets a group of teenagers—let’s just say it doesn’t bode so well for the teens. Other than those details, the plot has been kept fairly under wraps. It is known, though, that the film will also star Oscar-nominated actress Juliette Lewis (Cape Fear) and Beauty and the Beast star Luke Evans, whom you can watch in The Alienist opposite Daniel Brühl and Dakota Fanning, either on TNT now or on Netflix in April.

Ma will be directed by Spencer’s former The Help director, Tate Taylor. Taylor recently directed Emily Blunt in the 2016 film The Girl on the Train. Spencer is coming off her third Oscar nomination for Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water.

Ma is the latest development in the works from Blumhouse Productions, which is also working on an innovative anthology horror series for Hulu, as well. The company’s recent film Get Out received a Best Picture nomination and was named as Paste’s top film of the year. Blumhouse is also responsible for the horror franchise The Purge, which just unveiled its newest film’s politically charged poster.

Spencer has also been known to have a charitable side. Just announced yesterday, Spencer promised to buy out an entire movie theater in Mississippi to show Black Panther to underprivileged African-American children.

Ma is set to begin production this month in a not-yet-disclosed location.
