Mae Whitman’s Voice is to Die for in This Trailer for Operator

Poor Mae Whitman. Her voice is just too pleasant. At least, that’s what the trailer for Operator would suggest. In the film, Whitman plays the wife of Martin Starr’s character, a programmer who is looking for a soothing voice with which to create a call center program, and who finds such a voice in his wife.

Eventually, things get messy when Starr’s character begins preferring the A.I. he’s created to his actual wife. This puts an obvious strain on their relationship, one that’s reminiscent of the relationship between a man and his operating system so vividly depicted in Her.

Operator also stars Nat Faxon, Cameron Esposito and Retta. The film looks to be an examination of the shapes our relationships take, and the ways they can be fractured by technology as much as they can by other people.

The film hits theaters on Nov. 8. Until then check out the trailer above, and wonder how it’s possible to prefer a computer to the delightful Mae Whitman.
