Each month, your friends at Paste scour Kickstarter to find projects worthy of your support and love. This month we have a personal project from a familiar face, a rocking project worthy of your attention. Support independent art today by becoming a backer, why dontcha?
You may remember us raving about Fat Kid Rules the World after seeing it at SXSW this year. It’s the directorial debut from Matthew Lillard. You may remember him from The Descendants, or from Scream, or even from Scooby Doo, though to me he’ll always be Stevo from SLC Punk!. Other notable participants include Billy Campbell (of Paste favorite The Killing), Matt O’Leary (of Paste favorite Eden), and composer Mike McCready (of Paste favorite Pearl Jam).
Fat Kid is the inspiring, get-up-offa-that-thing-and-pump-your-fist story of a two high school kids — a desperate overweight video game addict, and a strung-out homeless punk rocker — and how they save each other. It’s John Hughes meets Sid and Nancy, and it just plain works. If this film doesn’t move you, you might want to check your pulse.
And talk about cool rewards. For as little as a $25 commitment, you’ll get a “Don’t F#ck with the Fat Kid” bumper sticker. $50 gets you a clear vinyl 7” single with two of the McCready songs. And for only $200, you get Lillard himself recording your outgoing voicemail message — as Shaggy. How many times do you have a chance to get that?
You can visit the Fat Kid Rules the World Kickstarter page here. Campaign ends this Friday.
