Watch the Emotional First Trailer for HBO’s Robin Williams Documentary
"He was really comfortable onstage. Offstage, I felt like he was just holding himself together"
Images via Sonya Sones/HBO, HBOThe first trailer for Come Inside My Mind, a documentary detailing the life and career of comedy giant Robin Williams, is out now and we’re not crying, you are. This is the first look at the film, set to come out through HBO exclusively, and it is heart-wrenching.
The story is told largely through Williams’ own words and runs through his wild days in late-’70s L.A. all the way to his tragic death by suicide in 2014. The film will include previously unheard interviews, home movies and onstage footage.
The trailer starts off with Williams’ happier times as he makes audiences laugh. It quickly shifts to the comedian’s darker side, as he addresses his fear of abandonment, failure and drug use. In the transition, his longtime friend Steve Martin says, “Onstage he was the master; he was really comfortable onstage. Offstage, I felt like he was just holding himself together.”
The film will also feature in-depth interviews from the people closest to Williams, including Martin, Whoopi Goldberg, Billy Crystal and Robin’s son, Zak Williams, who appears once in the trailer, saying, “my father didn’t always feel successful, but he was the most successful person I know.”
Don’t mind us while we open another box of tissues.
The film is directed by Marina Zenovich and will premiere on HBO on July 16. Watch the trailer below.
