Nominations Announced for the 25th SAG Awards

Known to be predictive of the Academy Awards, the 25th Annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards’ list of nominees has been released.

On Wednesday morning, SAG President Gabrielle Carteris introduced Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians, Ocean’s Eight) and Laverne Cox (Orange is the New Black, the forthcoming Bad Hair) to announce the nominees for this year’s award. A replay of the announcement is available for viewing down below.

The categories include outstanding individual, cast and ensemble performances in film and television, as well as outstanding action performances by film and television stunt ensembles.

SAG’s most coveted award, best ensemble, is the most followed category because it’s often indicative of what to expect at the Academy Awards. Only once in the last two decades has the eventual Oscars best picture winner not been nominated for best ensemble at the SAG Awards, per the AP.

A Star is Born scored the most nods, including nominations for best ensemble, and for Cooper (best male actor), Lady Gaga (best female actor) and Sam Elliott (best supporting male actor).

Alongside A Star is Born, BlacKkKlansman and The Favourite lead the motion picture awards, with three nominations each. Surprisingly, Bohemian Rhapsody, the Freddie Mercury biopic that has been popular with audiences but slammed by critics, fared well with nominations.

For television, both The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Ozark impressed, snagging four nominations each. Barry, GLOW, The Handmaid’s Tale and The Kominsky Method trailed close behind with three nominations each.

In January, Alan Alda will be presented with the prestigious SAG Life Achievement Award for career achievement and humanitarian accomplishment. Alda is best known for his 11 seasons as Dr. Hawkeye Pierce on M*A*S*H, which debuted in 1972. More recently, Alda joined the sixth season of The West Wing as Senator Arnold Vinick, for which he received an Emmy. He is also recognized for his work in major motion pictures, including The Aviator (2004) and Bridge of Spies (2015), amongst several others.

“It is an honor and privilege to announce that our SAG Life Achievement Award will be presented to the fabulous Alan Alda,” said SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris in a statement. “He is an artist whose body of work is a testament to the craft and the magic of our business. His ability to make us laugh, to think and to feel is extraordinary. From theater to television, movies, and new media Alan’s dedication and talent are exceeded only by his contributions to a just and caring society.”

The SAG Awards Ceremony will be simulcast live on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2019 on TNT and TBS at 8 p.m. EST, with host Megan Mullally.
