Scarlett Johansson is 2016’s Top-Grossing Actor

Movies News Scarlett Johansson

Scarlett Johansson is many things, including a Marvel megastar, a Tony Award-winning stage actress, and Hollywood’s highest-grossing actress of all time. So it’s no surprise that, per Forbes, she is also 2016’s top-grossing actor, with her role as Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Captain America: Civil War, plus, to a far lesser extent, a part in the Coen brothers’ Hail, Caesar!, rocketing her to box-office success—$1.2 billion worldwide, to be exact.

Johansson tops her MCU costars Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr., who tied for second with $1.15 billion in global gross. All three actors can chalk up their eye-popping earnings to Civil War, which was the year’s top-grossing movie with more than $1.15 billion worldwide. Margot Robbie and Amy Adams round out the top five.

Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds is the fourth and final Marvel star on Forbes’ list, which consists mostly of other superhero movie stars—in fact, half the list is made up of actors from Warner Bros.’ DC movies, including Suicide Squad and Batman v Superman. Rogue One’s Felicity Jones is actually the only non-comic book character to make the cut, joining the list for the first time in her young career.

2016 has been a record-breaking year at the box office, so complain as we might about the overwhelming prominence of movies based on pre-existing source material, they are clearly a boon to the business of filmmaking. Find Forbes’ full list of 2016’s top-grossing movie stars here.
