SyFy Announces Sharknado 5, With No Absurd Subtitle (Yet)

SyFy proclaimed today that its Sharknado series is going “Fin-Ternational” (shoot me) via the “worldwide production” of Sharknado 5. Principal photography began today, Feb. 2, in Bulgaria, where cheap films are born.

Ian Ziering and Tara Reid will return once again to the series, which returns after sequels with titles that included Sharknado 2: The Second One, Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No! and Sharknado 4: The Fourth Awakens. Paste, by which I mean myself, has reviewed every entry of the series if you can believe that, with decreasing returns along the way. The press release from SyFy and The Asylum humorously notes that Sharknado 5 is the film’s working title, suggesting that they haven’t yet come up with an acceptably bad play on words for the film … but surely that can’t be too far over the horizon. This entry will also see the return of Cassie Scerbo as Nova, the “bartender turned badass Sharknado fighter” from the first film. No surprise, given that she shows up in the conclusion of Sharknado 4.

When we last left our heroes, “the shark-infested storms went national” across the U.S. It’s safe to say that Sharknado 5 will finally make these shark storms an entirely global phenomenon. Filming will be taking place in five countries, including the U.K. and Australia. As ever, director Anthony C. Ferrante, who I also once interviewed for Paste, will be returning to helm another Sharknado project, with a script by Scotty Mullen. To quote the press release:

Now, in SHARKNADO 5, with much of North America lying in ruins, the rest of the world braces for the inevitable – a global sharknado. Fin Shepard and his family must put a stop to this disaster before Earth is completely obliterated.

Where can the series go from here? What’s left for Sharknado 6, other than interplanetary sharknados?
